Laser hair removal is one of the most frequent cosmetic procedures performed at skin care clinics, and it is a procedure that raises many questions. For this reason, we will discuss some of the myths and realities so that people can make an informed decision as well as allowing people to be sure of, and at ease with the procedure..

Are pulsed light (IPL) and laser the same?

Customers should ask if the service they are been offered is treatment with a true laser or if it is pulsed light. Normally the price for hair removal services such pulsed light are cheaper than with a true laser.

The difference between these two systems is that pulsed light produces energy that dissipates to different areas of the skin and it is not only targeted on the hair. True laser equipment emits a light that targets only to the pigment and is captured by the hair without being captured by the other parts of the skin. It is for that reason that more sessions are required when using pulsed light treatments, sometimes twice as many sessions.

Are all the laser hair removal treatments painful?

No, today there are lasers that have a cooling arm that is so strong that it makes the treatments almost painless (for example, Soprano Ice Platinum).  Not all laser equipment comes with technology like this; hence, they could be painful.

Can lasers remove blond hair or be used to treat dark skin?

There are three different types of laser.

The Alexandrite is a laser with a wavelength that is sufficient to treat very fine and shallow hair (for example, hair in the area of the ears and nose), fair skin and hair with not too much pigmentation (blond hair, residual peppery hair, already fine hair, etc.).

The Diode laser has longer wavelengths permitting it to penetrate deeper into the skin, treating coarse and deep hair, at the same time having fewer difficulties with melanin, thus treating coloured skin, even when they are lightly tanned.

The Nd-Yag laser is used to treat dark skin and deep and dark hair.

Nowadays we have lasers for all types of hair and skin colours.

Today, there is a laser in the market, the Soprano Ice Platinum, that emits the three wavelengths at the same time and this is the reason why it works effectively for everybody. It is important to remember that a person will have hair at different depths and of different sizes; making the Soprano laser one that achieves amazing results.

Can I have my hair removal treatment if I am tanned?

It is generally recommended to have your hair removal treatment two weeks before you are going to be exposed to the sun and once you have recovered your natural colour. However, there is equipment that can be used when you are tanned.
